Position:  Youth Navigator

Start date: ASAP following hire

Rate of Pay:  $21.86 per hour

Hours of Work:  40 hours per week, evenings, weekends and special event work as required by position

Supervision:  The successful candidate will be employed by the Fort Erie Native Cultural Centre Incorporated, responsible to the policies and directions determined by the Board of Directors and under the daily supervision of the Executive Director or his/her delegate.

Area of Responsibility:  The Youth Navigator with at minimum at 2-year Post-Secondary degree will be responsible to provide, individual and/or group services to all youth that attend the Fort Erie Native Cultural Centre in any capacity.  The Youth Navigator will assist in development/maintenance of a Youth Council.  The Youth Navigator is responsible in developing healthy partnership relations within the Fort Erie Native Cultural Centre for the youth as well as developing healthy partnerships with private and public organizations and agencies, educational and training institutions on behalf of the youth.  A primary focus of the Youth Navigator will be Rites of Passage for the Youth.

Job Specifications:

  • Strong cultural background
  • Collaborate with youth in assessing individual needs, identifying strengths as well as barriers and creating plans of action with the youth of addressing their needs
  • Assist youth to make well considered decisions related to identified needs
  • Providing referrals to appropriate resources along with support of introductions as needed/identified by youth
  • In consultation with the Manager, make decisions concerning the provision of extended services to youth with complex needs
  • Conduct follow up activities agreed to with youth as part of plan of action
  • Complete appropriate documentation on all youth
  • Ensure documentation is accurately completed
  • Participate in case management for youth when required
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with all FENFC staff, private and public organizations and agencies, educational and training institutions
  • Assess client need and eligibility in relation to program referral criteria
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of all parties concerned when assisting youth through referral process and case management process
  • Assist youth in the development with short and long-term goals
  • Develop presentations, workshops and open houses as needed to promote youth in the community
  • Work with the Board of Directors Youth Representative to create a Youth Council
  • All other duties as they relate to the Fort Erie Native Cultural Centre which may be assigned from time to time

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of Post-Secondary Education is mandatory (2-year minimum)
  • Knowledge of Fort Erie Native Cultural Centre and surrounding Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal organizations in the area to support youth in reaching their short- and long-term goals
  • Clear understanding and commitment to the needs, barriers, and goals of Indigenous Youth
  • Understanding and being familiar with Traditional Cultural knowledge
  • Ability to assess Indigenous Youth needs in an urban setting
  • Ability to develop action plans with youth
  • Excellent presentation skills and the ability to facilitate discussions
  • Exceptional computer skills
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Exceptional time management skills
  • Ability to engage urban Indigenous Youth
  • Ability to demonstrate cultural and social needs of Indigenous Youth
  • Ability to connect naturally with Indigenous Youth
  • Care and compassion in working with Indigenous Youth
  • Ability to plan, organize and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work well independently and as a team member
  • Ability to follow direction
  • MUST have a valid Ontario class G license, and a clean driver’s abstract.
  • Must have access to a dependable vehicle
  • Must have or be able to obtain a satisfactory vulnerable sector CPIC
