Position: Kizhaay Anishnaabe Niin Worker
Start date: Contract position until March 31, 2025 with possibility of extension
Rate of Pay: $21.86 per hour
Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, evenings, weekends and special event work as required by position
Supervision: The successful candidate will be employed by the Fort Erie Native Cultural Centre Incorporated, responsible to the policies, procedures and directions determined by the Board of Directors and under the daily supervision of the Executive Director or his/her delegate.
VISION
Primary Objective:
- Create opportunities for extended family and community reconciliation through culturally based programs and services for men and youth that build upon their abilities to make healthy choices, build healthy relationships, and speak out against violence against Indigenous women in their communities.
- To service community in compliance with Federal/Provincial legislation and FENCC policies and procedures.
- The name Kizhaay Anishnaabe Niin, was offered by Sandra Kakeeway and was the name of the Indigenous men’s anti-violence program in Thunder Bay. The program was named by the Old Man, Elder Peter O’Chiese, explicitly conveyed that our teachings required men to be kind. Kizhaay Anishnaabe Niin (an Ojibway phrase) translates to “I Am a Kind Man”.

Key Responsibilities
- Prepares monthly, quarterly and annual fiscal reports.
- Submission of reports according to set deadlines.
- One-to-One Peer Counselling to build skills and practice alternatives to violence
- Peer leadership that establishes a network to support participants
- Community re-integration for justice-involved men
- Community engagement to end the silence and stigma surrounding violence
- Deliver community led and driven prevention-based programs for men and male youth that focus on traditional roles and responsibilities, positive self-identification with cultural heritage; family healing and the creation of a safe spaces for men to create healthy relationships with their children
- Create implement, and contribute to safety and healing plans and strategies.
- Provide input into the establishment of local priorities that enhance safety for Indigenous women and girls
- Increase social engagement by supporting family re-integration into community through social and cultural events especially in the aftermath of violence or post-incarnation.
Client based activities
- Document all services provided to an individual client in which there is significant contact with the individual and/or on behalf of the client during which focused assistance is provided. All require case notes to be maintained.
- All client-based services must be related to reducing family violence.
- Services offered to a minimum of 15 clients annually may include; peer counselling, reducing family violence, improving Indigenous health, advocacy, crisis intervention and referrals.
- Referrals to other services such as addictions, shelters, court workers, legal, etc. Referrals within FENFC can be made as well as to other Indigenous organizations or non-Indigenous services, which are determined by need.
Participant based activities
- Focused on groups rather than individual initiatives.
- Services are offered to a minimum of 24 participants annually and may include; workshops, presentations, events, Traditional ceremonies, fitness/recreation activities.
- Targeted “participant” groups may include youth, men, women, the elderly, community leadership, service providers/volunteers, victims and victimizers.
- Increase awareness of specific issues, risks or concerns in the community or group.
- Provide education and information to reduce and prevent community or group risk factors.
- Promotion of positive changes in values, behaviours, and attitudes through role modelling and cultural teachings.
- To foster healing and empower families and communities to achieve and enjoy a healthy and balanced life.
Activity Requirements
- Individuals and Families
- Identify families and/or individuals in need of Kizhaay
- To assess family and/or individual needs to determine the extent of services required.
- Provide emergency services to violent family situations including support and follow up.
- Undertake to intervene in crisis situations.
- Refer victims to appropriate services.
- Link abusers with legal services or appropriate treatment services.
- Provide ongoing liaison service and follow up to ensure family and individual needs are being met.
- Promote healthy lifestyles by conducting home visits, workshops, seminars and public education forums.
- To know of and work with community agencies to support healthy Indigenous families ensuring cultural sensitivity.
- Promote violence free lifestyles.
- Promote Indigenous culture-based family and individual healing.
- Support the development of healing circles, peer support groups and self-help processes to assist in community healing, anger management, positive self-image development, alternative discipline methods and positive relationships.
- Work with other FENFC staff and programs to promote a coordinated approach to Kizhaay.
- Work with other Indigenous organizations and First Nations staff to promote a coordinated approach to Kizhaay.
Activities with Community:
- Coordinate youth, men’s and women’s healing circles.
- Promote, by programming and personal example, the development of positive role models in the community.
- Initiate community development activities leading to healthy families and lifestyles.
- Facilitate community events to promote healing, wellness, addictions free activities, positive parenting, family interaction and cultural awareness.
- Promote positive family interaction and activities targeting disadvantaged and single parent families.
- Facilitate the positive re-establishment of families.
- Participate in the development and establishment of culturally sensitive services which address individuals in Kizhaay
- Facilitate the involvement of Elders and Traditional people who have undergone their own healing and wellness journey.

- Primarily communicates with the Executive Director or designated Manager (for direction and approvals), and workgroup members for the purposes of consultation, and collaboration. Provides support to Program Managers pertaining to program/initiative/project budgets and reporting information.
SUPERVISORY & MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTABILITY – EXTERNAL
- Communicates with Friendship Centres/Delivery Sites, Suppliers, Funders and Government for the purposes of providing support and speaking to inquiries and reporting matters.

Work Environment
- Works in a safe and suitable office environment exposed to simultaneous reporting deadlines, mid to high-level computer use requiring high levels of accuracy and attention to detail.

Working Hours
- Regular hours: 9:00-5:00
- Summer hours: 8:00-4:00 (July through Labour Day)
